Early 18th Century French Baroque Upholstered Armchair

A large and handsome 300-year-old armchair. Seat height 16". Wonderful turned legs. Good color and patina. Upholstery distressed. We think this is from France, but it could be from Spain or Italy as well. An early 18th-century or older Continental chair was a rare item then, as only the rich, the clergy, and the nobility had chairs, period. Everyone else was lucky to have a stool. As a consequence, such chairs were prestigious, high-seated, and oversized, generally incorporating a raked back for comfort and surprisingly comfortable today.
