A 1940s photograph by the American master Bruce Bellas (1909 - 1974), depicting a seated male figure posed atop a classical column. Known by the pseudonym Bruce of Los Angeles, Bellas used his background in chemistry to master a stylized technique that combined Hollywood glamour with a refined, sculptural appreciation for the male form.

Circa 1940, this original period work was captured during the early years of the artist's career as he pioneered the aesthetics of modern physique photography.

Silver gelatin print on textured paper, presented with the sharp clarity and masterful lighting characteristic of the artist's studio work. Rooted in the Neoclassical tradition through its use of ancient architectural motifs, this photograph reflects a mid-century romanticism for the idealized human figure and the timeless beauty of antiquity.
