Circa 1880 Meiji Period Wood Kettle Hook, Japan
18.75" h x 8" w x 3.5" d
A hand-carved Japanese jizaikagi from the Meiji Period, originally used to suspend a heavy iron kettle over the central sunken hearth of a traditional home. Carved from a single piece of wood, its organic, sculptural form exhibits a deep, naturally developed patina born from decades of exposure to the smoke and warmth of the irori.
Circa 1880, this original period piece served as both a functional household tool and a symbolic guardian of the family home during the Meiji era.
Crafted from solid wood with a rich, dark finish and mounted on a modern custom stand for presentation. Rooted in the Mingei folk art tradition, this hook reflects the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in functional, everyday objects and the warmth of communal living.
