Lighting

Early lighting is rare. Often a candle or groups of candles were the end of the story. Fireplaces furnished lighting and heat, candles were luxury items.  Elaborately gilt decoration was meant to be seen by candle light. Oil lamps, common in antiquity, are sometimes found. Chandeliers were first candles, then gas, then about 1880 electrification came to the Paris Exposition and the lighting of the Avenue de l'Opera. Soon the most elegant and elaborate chandeliers imaginable were made in increasing amounts.
