Pair of Vintage Mecca Carved Wood Benches
19.75" h x 22.5" w x 19.75" d
A handsome pair of vintage benches, each raised on elegant square tapered legs decorated with carved acanthus leaves and resting on gadroon feet. The frames feature a beautiful interlocking mirrored pattern on the frieze, centered by a seashell reserve that highlights the meticulous Roman craftsmanship.
Circa 1900, these original period benches were crafted in Italy at a time when the grandeur of the Louis XIV style was being revisited with late 19th-century refinement.
The wooden frames are finished in mecca - a traditional Italian technique where silver leaf is coated with a golden lacquer - and topped with comfortable upholstered seats. Rooted in the Neoclassical tradition with strong Baroque influences, these benches reflect the 18th-century Italian love for highly architectural, decorative furniture designed to grace grand hallways and salons.
