Pair of Large Chinese Sancai Pottery Foo Dogs, 20th century or earlier
21.5" h x 8" w x 20.75" d
A commanding pair of Chinese guardian lions, traditionally known as Foo Dogs, representing the ancient tradition of spiritual protection and prosperity. The figures are captured with the classic characteristics of the male resting his paw upon an embroidered ball and the female nurturing a cub, their expressive faces and vibrant glaze reflecting the enduring power of these mythic sentinels.
Circa 1900, these original period pieces were crafted during a time when traditional Chinese guardianship was being reimagined for both sacred spaces and the refined home.
Finished in a classic sancai palette of green, amber, and cream glazes over a pottery form, with a rich patina that highlights the detailed casting of their manes and muscular frames. Rooted in the Chinese ceramic tradition, these lions embody the balance of yin and yang through a protective art form that has stood sentry at the gates of palaces and temples for centuries.
