A large baroque painting of the Annunciation to the Shepherds by Benjamin Cuyp. Attribution done by the Harvard’s Fog Museum in the 1960’s when the painting was cleaned and restored. The artist was identified by the unique color red used in this painting. Benjamin Gerritszoon Cuyp (1612-1652) was a Dutch Golden Age landscape painter from a famous family of artists. This painting was purchased from the estate of Charles Townes, Nobel prize winning physicist and professor.
