Louis XVI Two-Drawer Commode, Italy circa 1770
32.5" h x 50" w x 27" d
An elegant Italian two-drawer commode crafted in the Louis XVI style, featuring a refined rectangular case and a serpentine profile. The piece is distinguished by its intricate marquetry in contrasting woods and its ornate gilt bronze mounts, including floral garlands and bird motifs that exemplify the delicate artistry of the late 18th century.
Circa 1770, this original period piece was made during the height of the Neoclassical revival in Italy, a time when artisans embraced the grace and symmetry of classical antiquity.
Veneered in tulipwood, kingwood, and amaranth over a white oak frame, surmounted by a brèche d'Alep marble top and finished with cast gilt bronze hardware. Rooted in the Neoclassical tradition, this commode reflects the transition toward straight lines and geometric harmony that defined European furniture design during the reign of Louis XVI.
